This takes us back a few years to a time when stories began to surface about adverse side effects to the use of drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. Men had begun to report changes to their eyesight. One or two men apparently lost their sight for short periods of time. On many occasions when side effects are reported under the Postmarketing Surveillance Program, the FDA does not react immediately. Sometimes, it does not react at all. Without going into the politics of its role, some critics suggest the FDA is in the pocket of the pharmaceutical industry and would never react to reports of side effects unless the evidence is too public and overwhelming to ignore. That’s what made it all the more surprising when the FDA decided to apply a watered down version of the precautionary principle to erectile dysfunction drugs. Just so we all understand, the precautionary principle says you pull a product off the market until it is proved safe. Since proving the negative is difficult, this can mean the product is off the market for a long time. With erectile dysfunction drugs, we are talking about retail sales in excess of one billion dollars in 2008. You do not mess with this market by shutting it down. The most you can do is change the label to warn users of potential dangers.
In July, 2005, the FDA issued a notice acknowledging rare reports of eye problems. The notice did not accept there was evidence of a link between the drugs and the vision problems. It simply advised men affected to seek emergency aid if the rare event affected them. From a scientific point of view, there is a strong likelihood of a link. These drugs target PDE5 in the body. The relevant arteries in the eye are controlled by PDE6. The drug may not be completely specific in all bodies and the effect on PDE5 may shade into PDE6. That said, the pharmaceutical industry had a marketing problem. Even though everyone acknowledged these were extraordinarily rare events, the release of the notice by the FDA did cause some alarm. The industry therefore commissioned some research which was published this year in the Archives of Ophthalmology. It’s good news. Some 250 men men with good eyesight and erectile dysfunction were recruited and given various dosages of the drugs, one pill per day for six months. Their vision was routinely monitored throughout the trial period. There were no significant differences found between their sight before and after the period. There was no measurable effect of any kind in any of the men (except their erections, of course).
One word of caution. To be able to generalize from one sample to the population at large, there should be more men included in the trial. Only 250 men is not statistically significant. That said, this is a detailed study and the results are encouraging. Viagra has not been given an absolutely clean bill of health, but this comes close. If the industry can be persuaded to recruit a sufficient number for the next trial, we can arrive at a definitive result. While we wait, buy viagra online with complete confidence. There is no evidence anyone has ever lost their sight because of this drug.

Let’s start this off with a simple definition. Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the human body cannot use the natural sugar in the blood as energy. The cause is the failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin. It comes in two different forms. In Type 1, the body fails to make any insulin. In Type 2, the body makes some insulin but fails to use it properly. It’s estimated that about 57 million people in the US are in the slide into diabetes, i.e. their blood sugar levels are already too high because their bodies are resisting the effect of insulin. This can only be described as an epidemic in the making. Why should we care? After all, both forms of diabetes are treatable. Well, the answer comes in two steps. Many people do not realize their danger in time. As a result, the diabetes begins to damage the body. Untreated, it can cause heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. In extreme cases, the feet and legs can develop gangrene and they have to be amputated. The second problem lies in the nature of Type 2 diabetes. This is largely a lifestyle issue. People eat and drink excessively, their weight rises and their body’s metabolism is thrown out of balance. Effective treatment requires change. An extreme measure is gastric bypass surgery to bring down the weight fast. Without this, it depends on people sticking with a diet and exercising regularly.
Erectile dysfunction is one of the first symptoms of Type 2 diabetes in men. The arteries leading into the penis are among the smallest in the body. To achieve an erection, the smooth muscle walls must be able to dilate. Unfortunately, as the blood sugar level rises, the walls of all blood vessels begin to harden. This slows down the dilation and the ability to achieve an erection gradually disappears. This disappearance is what drives men into seeking help. In turn, this prompts the diagnosis of the underlying problem.
Then, it’s all up to the man to change. Everything that can be done to prevent the spread of the disease must be done. This means following the treatment program laid down by your doctor and removing all the factors contributing to the erectile dysfunction. So you have to remove all the major causes of stress from your life. Try to be more laid back for all the right reasons. Quit smoking and stop excessive drinking. Some alcohol is OK but not a lot. And then lose some weight. Change your diet and, most importantly, start exercising. Raising your fitness and stamina levels improves the circulation of your blood and gives better erections. This is a high priority. As your blood sugar levels come under control, the damage to your body will slow. You can use viagra as needed to maintain the hardness of your erection but, as your weight drops, you should find erections improve naturally. Congratulations! You brought diabetes under control before all the major health disasters hit you and restored your erections. If you do not take effective action, buy viagra online. This will keep you going for a year or so but note the warnings given above. The point of the diagnosis is giving you the chance to prevent a disease from making you seriously ill in a few years time. The longer you delay effective action, the greater the risk of heart disease, blindness and amputations.

It’s never a happy thought, but we are all getting older. Those of us boomers are into our sixties now with the rest of the pack starting to catch up. This is the time when things really start going wrong with our bodies. Most of us have been lucky up to now. But despite the best efforts of medical science, there’s no pill to slow down the years. Worse, the most likely first symptom of age is going to be erectile dysfunction. All those high cholesterol meals we crammed away will come back to bite us as layers of platelets build up on the walls of our blood vessels. Some call this arteriosclerosis, others artherosclerosis. Whichever name, the result is the same. The muscles in the walls of the arteries needed to dilate start to fail. Without the dilation, there can be no erection. It’s an unhappy thought, but loss of sexual power can be the first symptom of a lifestyle with too much fat and too little exercise. When someone invents a time machine, we can go back and give ourselves good advice. Until then, we have to make the best of our golden years.
Curiously, the world is growing old with us. When we were young and living through the fifties, the television was a novelty. Replacing the radio and its world of advertiser-sponsored programs came the future with moving images and all the new ads. They were simple sales pitches, very naive by modern standards. But they got the message across. And what were those messages? Well, for the most part, housewives were told what food to put on our plates, what drinks to offer us. Then came the things to make the household run smoothly and the latest model vehicle to get us from A to B. In between were sometimes disturbing news reports which grew worse as we came into the sixties and the Russians took over Cuba as a missile base on our doorstep. In some senses, it’s actually more relaxing to have the modern coverage of world events. For the most part, our media have forgotten the need to tell us what’s happening outside our shores. It’s more important to package our local politics as the news and give us the messages most important to those controlling the content. The ads have changed as well. The networks have decided the silver-haired crowd has the buying power. We boomers hold what’s left of the purse strings. So we need to know about the adhesive to keep our dentures in place, heat wraps to keep the arthritis pain under control and the latest pills to keep Alzheimer’s away. Oh, and the pills to keep our sex lives going.
Living through the last sixty and more years has been living through a cultural revolution. Who would have thought we would see erectile dysfunction openly discussed on TV with viagra available to treat it. It’s something no-one could have predicted in the buttoned-down fifties when Bob Newhart could so innocently poke fun at the police with a sketch about a nude line-up to identify a flasher. The only thing that we can rely on now is viagra. That gets a rise out of everything still important to us.

There’s always something faintly alarming about information when you start putting numbers into the news. Tell someone there’s a chance of rain and they nod without worry. Change that to a warning there’s a 90% chance of rain and they reach for their umbrella. Putting numbers on risk or indicating the size of the population at risk makes the danger seem more real. So just writing that millions of men suffer from erectile dysfunction is vague and not alarming. Say there are tens of thousands new cases of impotence in the US every year and suddenly you’re doing sums on the back of an envelope. There are how many million living in the US? Are there an equal number of men and women? How many children are there? So the risk of… Hey, that’s serious! And don’t forget that these tens of thousands are just the men who admit the problem. Millions more either suffer in silence or quietly buy the treatment online.
Once you get your head around the scale of the possible problem, two thoughts come to mind. Sexual performance in the bedroom is the basis of almost all stable relationships. If the erection fails, many relationships also fail. Secondly, if there are 90,000 new cases of impotence plus all the current ones, there must be millions of unhappy women. Since relationships usually rely on sex, this leaves many women with no active partner which must be deeply frustrating. Without having to resort to the use of drugs, there’s always good news from the medical community about alternative remedies. In this case, the simple and natural treatment is a regular routine of physical exercise.
When it comes down to simple plumbing, the usual reason why men do not get an erection is that the arteries into the penis do not carry enough blood. This is a problem with the circulation of the blood in general and the muscles in the artery walls that do not dilate as they should. If men become more active, this improves the circulation system and encourages a harder erection. But, to be effective, this exercise must be regular, sustained and sufficiently energetic to build up muscle tone and increase the heart rate. It’s not enough to go for a gentle walk once a week. You need a daily vigorous exercise routine which builds up fitness.
You could just reach for the viagra and boost your performance with little effort. But exercise is good for you in a number of ways. You look better and become more attractive as you lose some weight. You also feel better in yourself. To stay motivated, pick exercise that you enjoy. You could go dancing or plant vegetables in the yard and enjoy fresh produce as part of your diet. Whatever you do, you can buy viagra while you are rebuilding the strength in your body. When sexual power is restored, put the viagra away until you are older and stay with an exercise program that lets you dance your way to success on the dance floor and in the bedroom.
